Over 90% of data transactions on IoT devices are unencrypted

Over 90% of data transactions on IoT devices are unencrypted (CSO)

  • Recent analysis by Zscaler, a global cloud-based information security company based in the US, has found that 91.5% of data transactions performed by IoT devices in corporate networks were unencrypted.
  • The analysis is based on telemetry data collected from Zscalers’ cloud and covers more than 56m IoT device transactions from 1,051 enterprise networks between March and April 2019.
  • Another observation made by the company is that most IoT devices are connected to the same network as business-critical applications and systems, which means that when one is compromised, attackers can then target all other systems.

Analysis & Comments

  • Another week, another damning report on the cyber security of the things that collectively form the IoT – I am admittedly running out of creative ways to say “the IoT needs cyber security standards and regulation to unlock its potential and address growing data security concerns”.
  • On the other hand, this opens up opportunities for those addressing the security issue, as well as companies that are implementing high security standards. The financial services firm Cyberhedge has recently launched Cyber Governance Indexes to prove good cyber governance matters to shareholder value.
  • Gartner predicts there will be 20.4bn IoT devices in use worldwide by 2020, with adoption among enterprises at more than 65%.
